Mixing the cocoa powder with a little bit of cold water before whisking into the boiling water prevents clumping; grandma's helpful hint ;)

Got the ingredients in anticipation of the snow storm. No storm, but the hot chocolate was amazing.

2 c. milk + 1 c. heavy cream, or 1-1/2 c. each. throw in some espresso powder, too.

Add a half ounce of Cointreau if you want to turn your hot chocolate into a little boozy chocolate orange.

Adding a stick of cinnamon after the milk makes this perfect! The recipe halves well, too.

Starbucks hot chocolate mix has in it very little chocolate of any kind and very expensive per cup. Nasty stuff. The NYT recipe is easily tuned to individual taste.

wouldnt the world be a better place if someone wanting to convey this same message just said something like:“i find milk has plenty of natural sweetness. give it a try with whole milk and cocoa alone and see if you agree!”sigh

Perfectly rich and decadent. The perfect family treat. I add cinnamon and red chili powder to mine with some homemade whipped cream.

Use medium pan. I used semi-sweet chocolate chips and thought it was too much chocolate. Added about 2 extra cups of milk.

I always mix cocoa powder with corn flour and icing sugar (I think confectioners sugar in the US) and whisk it slowly into the milk, comes out deliciously thick and creamy

If your kid’s girlfriend happens to be vegan, this totally works with almond milk. Still insanely smooth and rich and delish.

Mixing the cocoa power with water is a good idea, but mixing with the cocoa with a little Amaretto is even better. This also eliminates the need for any sugar.
Charlotte
Add some cinnamon powder on top of your cup of hot chocolate, you won't be disappointed!

This was so easy to make, and it tasted wonderful! Def, use this recipe<<<

Try it with a tiny bit of cayenne!

For the past three years, since getting a cancer diagnosis, I've had a daily "very special" hot chocolate combining organic cacao powder and two different brands of premium Dutch chocolate. The "special-ness" part is the addition of seven different types of medicinal mushroom powders (Turkey Tail, Lion's Mane, Chaga, Reishi, Cordiceps, Shiitake, and Eucommia Bark) as well as two teaspoons of natural, organic sugar crystals. I like organic cow's milk as the liquid but non-dairy milks work well.

When making just one cup the microwave works well!

Delicious!

Milk has plenty of sugar (lactose) in it. Adult hot chocolate is made with a cup of hot milk whisked into a few teaspoons of pure cocoa powder dissolved in a bit of hot water. Milk should be 2% or whole milk.

I liked this except I feel like it had a bit to much powder. It tasted like I didn’t mix it enough, which is either my fault or the recipes.

I found that it was really rich and added more whole milk and it worked
Colleen
Made it with dark chocolate instead of bittersweet. Some added coffee to make it a mocha. Delish! Big hit in our Christmas household.

This is a nice recipe. The mix of chocolate types is the way to go. For a nice variation, a bit of cinnamon and a dash of cayenne. Or for grownups, a bit of fireball whiskey (only good use for it) and a touch of schnapps.

Way too chocolaty! Needed to add lots more sugar and milk. Starbucks hot chocolate mix from Costco is so much better.

Actually, Starbucks hot chocolate it not too bad if you ask the barista to skip the nasty vanilla syrup, which adds a boat-load of sugar.
